Acupuncture

What is acupuncture? Acupuncture may be defined as the stimulation of a specific point on the body with a specific method, resulting in a therapeutic homeostatic effect. The specific point on the body is called “Shu-xu” or acupuncture point (acupoint). The ancient Chinese people discovered 361 acupoints in human beings and 173 acupoints in animals. Modern research shows that acupoints are located in the areas where there is a high density of free nerve endings, mast cells, small arterioles, and lymphatic vessels. Most acupoints are motor points. A great number or studies indicate that stimulation of acupoints induce release of beta-endorphin, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters. Therefore, acupuncture for pain relief is well supported by these scientific studies. As more studies are conducted, the mechanism of this ancient therapy will be better understood.

How does it work? Acupuncture is now known to affect all major physiological systems. It works primarily through the central nervous system affecting the musculoskeletal, hormonal, and cardiovascular systems. It does more than relieve pain. How it works depends on what condition is being treated and which points are utilized. Acupuncture increases circulation, causes a release of many neurotransmitters and neurohormones such as endorphins, the bodies “natural pain-killing” hormones. Acupuncture can relieve muscle spasms, stimulate nerves and the body’s defense systems, and much more. Acupuncture has been shown through research in modern times to positively influence immune system function, gastrointestinal function, and internal organ function as well as provide pain relief.

Do the needles hurt? Over 95% of patients are comfortable with acupuncture therapy. Some animals will fall asleep during treatments.

Is acupuncture therapy safe? Yes, it is a very safe medical procedure when administered by a qualified practitioner. Very few side effects have been found in clinical cases.

How many treatments are needed? It depends upon the nature, severity, and duration of the disease or ailment. A single treatment may be enough for an acute condition. A series of 3 to 10 treatments can resolve many chronic problems. Some degenerative conditions may need monthly treatments over time.

How long do the treatments take? After the initial treatment which includes a comprehensive physical exam, each treatment takes 40-60 minutes. Clients are welcome to stay with their pet during the treatment or leave the patient for the day. Our inviting acupuncture room provides a couch and comfortable space for our clients to wait in if they choose to stay.
